Titans!

There is so much student pride at CSUF. Everyone seems to own CSUF / Fullerton / Cal State and/or Titan (student body) hats, shirts, keychains, waterbottles, pens, wristbands, toys, etc.

It is really great to see people walking around and voluntarily branding themselves with their school.

I am really starting to feel like I belong here now. People seem to understand my accent better these days, I have friends who call and text me to ask what I am doing and if I want to go out, I have school accessories that I use, I run into people I know on campus and we exchange pleasantries, and I am a member of several groups.

Yes, I have mentioned my membership of the Hermanas Unidas (even though I am not Latina) and the LGBA (Lezbian, Gay, Bisexual Alliance even though I am straight) but I am also a member of the Students for Democracy (designed to re-energise the student revolution of yester-year) and the American Marketing Association!

Until now I have been unsuccessful in joining a sorority or fraternaty (yes, some frats accept girls) because the first two weeks ("rush") are introductions to the group (which I largely missed) and then there is a semester of bonding type behaviour before they may or may not invite you to join them for the following semester (which I will not be here for). However, due to some rather expert negotiation, persuasive and networking skills, I have convinced the Multicultural Sorority - Lambda Sigma Gamma, to make me a sister (the only person they are intaking this semester)!! WooOOOooo!

Now I am going to have to become one of those pretty, blonde girls....

Hermanas Unidas Statewide Conference 2006

Friday I ran away to Hollywood with three Hermanas. I don't know if I have mentioned the Hermanas Unidas (pronounced erRRr-man-us oo-nee-das contrary to prior belief...) but they are the women's Latina group - "Sisters United".

I joined them just over a week ago and went with my fellow sisters for the annual statewide conference at the Woodcrest Hilton in Hollywood. Friday was a big party session spent largely with me trying to adapt to the local dancing style... Unlike what you might imagine, the moves were a little less salsa / cha-cha and instead a little more dry humping on the dance floor, pornstar style....

Saturday I attended a couple of interesting information sessions connected to being a successful hermanas. In particular I found sessions helpful on overcoming communication assumptions, professional networking and the psychological barriers of being a renoun Latina. The afternoon was capped off by displays from each of the Hermanas Unidas Chapters (different university groups) about what they had done throughout the year. It was fun and interesting and concluded with a massive chapter vs. chapter dance off (again, porn star dance style). Being a rookie, I had to go up on stage with my clubs president to represent our group. We won. Not really. I just hate loosing.

Sunday we drove past the infamous "Hollywood" sign on the way home... My carpool laughed at me but I don't care. I'm cool!

President's Day Weekend

I rented a car on Friday and in true independent woman style, drove myself across four states this weekend. I totally underestimated this trip on so many levels.

The traffic was intense, the exits were surprisingly difficult to find, the conditions difficult to navigate, the cold, oh, so cold and the drive really, really long. In all though, it was grouse!

On Friday night, after a really long drive, I called my housemate all excited to announce that I was just driving into Vegas and was wondering where to go... She laughed at me when she realised that I thought the fluro town of Primm was Las Vegas. Once I got to LV, I realised why....

I have mentioned on here the giant food, the giant roads (and I don't know that I have yet mentioned the giant vehicles that consume many, many gallons of 'gas' while their owners complain about the rising fuel costs - even though they have the cheapest fuel I have ever seen) but the 'mega' resorts are PHENOMENAL!

Each themed mega-resort is like walking into another land, another country and/or another time period. Each resort is a city of impressive themed displays, interesting shops, plentiful rides and rollercoasters as well as exuberant performances. Each complex also contains a casino I have been lost in more than one time, and so many beautiful tourists. (Please note that this picture of The Venician is taken on the third level of the building, in the middle of the night...)

As you can imagine, I was so cut I couldn't share the experience of Vegas with you all but decided not to let it hinder my experience. I decided to make random new friends... Before long I found some young punkers that looked like fun. Unlike in Bris-vegas (ha! Bris'Vegas'), when people dress up like young punkers in the States, the likelihood that they are famous is very, very high. The fun crew I approached and said "Hey! You guys look cool, where do the 'cool kids' hang out?" happen to be a band called End Ever After and were in Vegas looking for a recording studio as part of their quarter million (US$) contract with Sony. I ended up spending my Friday in Vegas with these really nice guys who let me into their world and home for the night. If you like old-school rock and roll, I recommend you keep an ear-out for them...

Anyway, Saturday I headed off to Bryce Canyon (after mum told me that it is a better version of the Grand Canyon). The drive was amazing, or at least it was aesthetically impressive until I stopped briefly to refuel and ended up leaving just on dark (after having locked my keys in the rental at the gas station and had to wait for a locksmith...). Anyhu, that night while the band headed off to see Aerosmith and Lenny Kravitz before partying with Paris Hilton (for her 25th birthday of which there was a problem with her underage boyfriend not being able to get in), I drove through a random mountain range and was really surprised to come across snow-kissed roads. When the snow started to fall as I was well into the road I started to get a bit freaked. After pulling over and consulting the Lonely Planet guide for advise and finding none, a man who had passed me a while earlier drove back to ask if everything was okay. He then advised me to carry on and just drive really slowly. This is good advise and advise I tried to listen to. This is advise that didn't stop me from loosing control of my vehicle and spinning out of control until I hit the side of a snow-covered embankment.

That terrifying experience aside, I carried on up to Bryce Canyon where I slept the night with all my clothes on and wrapped in a dona. I lie. I tried to sleep. Being the tropical friendly Brisbane girl that I am, I was completely unprepared for the cold. I froze my extremities off trying to sleep in my car. I decided in the middle of the night that car heating was the best idea ever until I realised I had no idea where I was and where the nearest petrol station was, and that I should probably resolve to freeze rather then run out of fuel... I later found out it had been -16 degrees Celsius in the night...

In the morning I was greeted by a stunning sunrise over Bryce Canyon. It was so gorgeous and impressive that if my eyeballs had of stopped freezing over*, I could have looked at all the amazing and varying views that each lookout presented all day.

Next I headed to Zion National Park which was so different and amazing compared to Bryce Canyon. I will have to head back there sometime though because the snow clouds followed me and obscured most of what would otherwise be breathtaking views....

Sunday night I was back in Vegas. I soaked up as much free nightlife (of which I could never have even hoped to get all the way through) before tiredness forced me to resolve coming back to Vegas another time. I did manage to explore the dodgy area of town including Stardust, the Wynn Hotel and Circus, Circus before moving to a much nicer area of 'the strip' to see a show and shop at Caesar’s Palace, watch the volcano water show at The Mirage, see the performance out the front of Treasure Island, watch a serenade on a gondola at The Venetian, watch flaming at Hurrahs, see the jet show out the front of the Belagio, and much more!

I decided that as appealing as another cold night sleeping in the car would be, I would try to make it back to Orange County. I did not get far before I started to get sleepy and was stalked by a car with super bright headlights. I thought the jerks behind me had power beams aimed at my head and was starting to wonder why they just didn't overtake me when I realised that they were cops and I was speeding. They took no pity on the tired Aussie and I got a ticket - a mega ticket to finish off my weekend.

I did end up pulling off the road shortly after to catch some ZZzzs before resuming my journey home early the next morning.

Like I said, I was totally unprepared for the weekend but it was a great experience. I can't wait to go back to Las Vegas with my new mates!

*mild exaggeration, but only mild!

Valentines day rant...

I am a bitter and twisted single.

Not usually, just on Valentines day.

Usually I am absolutely delighted that I am free to flirt and have fun with whoever I want, whenever I want.... It is the jealousy that comes from seeing other people get presents that I might otherwise be entitled to that makes me cut.

However, not worrying about someone else is great. I don't have to be concerned about 'them' forgetting some anniversary we've created or worse, me forgetting... and I can put the money I would otherwise put into something my chosen person might like, into buying something I will LOVE for myself.

Ha!

Maybe I am a little bitter but I am also single and happy!

Mad week!

Thursday I decided that I needed to meet some nice, down-to-earth, open minded friendly people (since there is so much superficiality around here), so I went to the GLBA (Gay, lesbian, bi-sexual association) meeting. It was so much fun! Everyone was so friendly and funny and nice. During introductory games where you had to agree or disagree with statements I kept on forgetting that I probably wasn’t meant to be there if I was straight and as a result kept on making all this straight comments…. (they probably just think I am bi…). Anyway, I have met such a great group of people in this group who I know are going to become some of my closest friends!

Following the meeting Taka (the Japanese friend who I have started calling Taco) took me to downtown Fullerton to catch some awesome jazz. Awesome it was...

Friday night I took my aunt to dinner to say 'thank you for everything'. We went to this AMAZING restaurant called The Rainforest Cafe in Downtown Disney. Our 'safari' of two had dinner in the jungle with everyone and everything else. Around us were giant bugs and butterflies, robotic elephants and gorillas as well as chimpanzees, rainforest birds and giant aquariums! Every 20minutes a 'thunderstorm' struck and the lighting hit, the calypso and reggae music was overshadowed by thunder, and the elephants and gorillas went crazy - moving up and down and making their noises! It was phenomenal!

Saturday my aunt and I went to a ball. There was apparently an age limit; you had to be over 70. Also, if you were male, you had to be creepy. eg. (actual conversation):
Old creep man: You aren't allowed to dance like that.
(To me standing on the side of the room swaying like a drunk sailor.)
Me: I'm not dancing, I'm swaying.
Old creep man: That sort of sexy dancing isn't allowed.
Me: I'm not dancing, I'm swaying.
Old creep man: I'm [insert whatever his creepy old man name was].
Me: That's nice.
Old creep man: I have 'The Emancipation of Mimi' in my car, you know, Mariah Carrey.
Me: That's nice.
Old creep man: Is your significant other here?
Me: He is in the car waiting for me.
My aunt (interrupting): Do you have any kids?
Old creep man: Yes.
My aunt: How old are they?
Old creep man: The youngest one is 28.
My aunt: This is my daughter, she is 22.
Old creep man: Oh, okay, well, if you two aren't doing anything, you should come up to room 1426, that is where the party's going and where lots of booze is.

At this point I started dry-hurling... Only to be quenched later by joining other ball attendees on the dance floor for some serious (and VERY repetitive) line dancing.

Yesterday I finally moved into my apartment with new housemate and friend, Annalina, from Italy (Torino - where the winter Olympics are currently being played out actually). After I moved my stuff in, she and I went to Newport Beach to jump into the sea and cleanse my tainted energy. It was so cold my body was burning in the water but it was so nice to be at the beach (even if the sand is brown).

So that is my life up 'til now.

This weekend I am looking at driving to Los Vegas and possibly the Grand Canyon!

Yay!

Will write again soon.

Bragging...

I may have chatted to Jeff Goldbloom (of Jurassic Park fame) infront of The Statue of David a couple of years ago, I may have shaken the hand and made the Duke of Edinburgh laugh, I may have banged heads with Missy Higgins, interviewed The Cat Empire and the Waifs, partied with Prince Harry, eaten with Dirty Lucy, chilled with Arrested Development and been on tour with Pete Murray and the Stone Masons but on Sunday I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting perhaps one of the most famous and charming characters of all time. Don't be jealous. I actually met Mickey Mouse!

I know!

Wow!

Disneyland is fantastic!

I met up with Mickey just after Peter Pan and Wendy walked past with some kids in hand, just before (the real) Whoopi Goldberg was escorted past me to see a parade of all my childhood characters (where I caught Prince Charming giving me the eye - so between you and me, I don't think things are all so peachy between him and Cinderella...), just before I boogied with Buzz Lightyear and then patted Winni the Pooh's bottom (softer than a baby!).

What a day!

Some say Disneyland is overrated. I say that is was awesome and well worth going as a single adventurer (because most of the time I got to go straight to the front of the ride lines)!

Will let you know if anything happens between me and Prince Charming...

Thoughts for today...

I was thinking that there was an insanely high number of schizophrenic people in Orange County before I realised that everyone wears a wireless headpiece for their mobile phone attached to one ear (invariably the one ear I can’t see…)…

There is apparently something in the water at California State University Fullerton that causes the hair of girls’ eyebrows to fall out. Due to this phenomena, girls at uni have to paint on their eyebrows, sometimes in a very natural fashion (creating a bushy eyebrow effect).

There also seems to be something in the air of the Los Angeles area that renders leg muscles useless. This unfortunately means that LAliens must rely on their cars to get from A to B at all times, including driving next door to pick up groceries (seriously). It is also a known fact that when foreign students, still with the full use of their legs, go walking for exercise, they are stopped by motorists offering a ride.

God bless America!

Thank you Taka!!

Thank you Taka for making an effort on my birthday!!

Taka another international student from Japan ensured that my 22nd birthday was fun and full!

First of all we went bowling downstairs of the Student Union Centre, where we also had delicious American Pizza and sugary deserts before heading out to the Irvine Spectrum Centre to a loud and out of tune music singing session!

It was seriously so much fun!

THANK YOU TAKA!!!!!!!

One week today in smoggy LA

I just had a friend ask me if things were 'really' so different in the States to home and I have to say, 'yes'. I have been incredibly surprised at how different things are here. I am SO glad that the weather isn't too different and the language is English, even if I am only understood half the time...

My impresion of the States so far is that people are super friendly (I think most people think prozac is a daily vitamin along with laxatives) and they are all beautiful (or at least well dressed and wearing a lot of well manipulated make-up), REALLY Christian and brunette. I am told however that the people in Los Angeles, are a people of there own and therefore a lot different to the rest of the States... Not sure what that means yet...

I am currently staying with my Godmother just now. She is great and lets me know a lot that she is my "American mom". She also is always asking me if I am hungry or if I have had enough to eat (apparently my mum told her I don't eat well) but I don't mind, her mum, a funny Peurto Rican lady makes me great Peurto Rican meals. Gladys (my "American grandma") also repeats everything I say in Spanish before answering me in Spanish and then translating into English in an attempt to teach me her language.

Yesterday I found a place to live with a fantastic Italian girl called Annalina for about $US500 month. That's a great price. I move in next weekend.

Classes started here on Monday (orientation was last Thursday). I have three classes on Monday and Wednesday (International Marketing, Professional Selling and Integrated Marketing Communications) as well as one class on Tuesday and Thursday (Marketing Strategies). Over here there are no lectures and tutorials, classes are both in one and go for one and a quarter hours twice a week. It works well for me.

Last Sunday I went skiiing with one of my new friends, Henry, and his friend Miranda.

Tomorrow is my birthday. I plan to spend the evening down at the on campus bowling alley / bar / billiard room where there is a first-week party going on.

On Friday I am seeing a play with Annalina in North Hollywood and on Saturday there is a Chinese New Year party. Super bowl is on Sunday and I will be watching because I want to see the million dollar advertisements.... ha!

In all, things are going pretty well here. I just need a job now and to settle into a routine.

Miss you all!

Kristiana
