Reflections

Last night I was out with friends in Long Beach. We had a good night but at the end of the night when we were all heading out of the club, someone pulled a gun.

I don't think I have ever been so genuinely terrified in all my life. I was terrified because I have never come across a situation like this before, one in which one person, in a moment, can potentially hurt and/or kill someone around them so blatently. I was terrified because my friendship group was split in two and I didn't know where half the group was...

Everything ended up being okay but it is a stark reminder to me that I am not in Bris-vegas anymore...

I am so lucky though to have the friends that I do. I never feel totally screwed or alone and that is really amazing. Thank you to Avery, Marissa, Jessica and Cindy for a great night.

p.s. I am now officially single.

No Butt Prints, Please

This blog is targeted at 'Random Sarah', the formerly annonymous comment leaver on my site who wants to know a little more about how to get involved with projects she believes in. On my homepage, kristianaonline.com I have a blog titled 'No Butt Prints, Please' which is an article I wrote for Issue 5 of CirQUTry, the Queensland University of Technology's student magazine. Hope it helps.

My perfect weekend

Saturday morning I woke up in time for a quick breakfast with Saturday morning music videos (something I LOVE) before packing wetsuit, long board and other suitable day trip things, in preparation for a beach day.

On the Gold Coast the sun brightly glimmered above, wind gently blew a comfortingly warm day through my hair, soft white sand flirted with turquoise, blue and green waves that were tipped with white bubbles and life guards attentively managed everyone in the water. I got caught in a little rip but that just talk me to calmer water where I floated a little before swimming to the side and coming to the shore just as a red and yellow capped life guard started entering the water to rescue me if I had needed it.

I then met Clare for lunch at the Surfers Paradise Surf Club before catching up more over shopping escapades.

Before daylight could negotiate sunset in exchange for night I headed up to the mountains and did a little treck through the rainforest. As darkness started to settle in around me I noticed more and more dancing lights around me. This was really exciting because I realised I had never been comfortably in the rainforst at night before and what better place to be in the rainforest than the setting of Fern Gully!

I caught a dancing light and realised that it was one of perhaps millions of little glowbugs that were making magic around me. I sat down for a bit and listened to the rainforest sounds around me; the frog croaks, woody creeks and leafy rustles. I was able to make out a couple of possums sleepily making their way out of their homes and before the mozzies could start making to much of a feast out of me, I left for night mischief to take over...

On the drive down from Mt Tamborine I kept on staring and the starry, starry night beyond the canopy above and was reminded of a desert drive back from Vegas with my friend Natasha in the States. Oh the contrast.

Sunday I made my way to the multicultural fiesta that was going on in the largest sub-tropical rainforest in a city, in the world. It was such a beautifully hot day to be shared with people from all different backgrounds, races and ethnicities over global music, food and artistic projects. It was a really, really beautiful day that gave me a chance to hang out with my mates Bure and Josh, as well as my cousin Jane.

Afterwards Josh and I were walking back to the car when we discovered an equisitely positioned abandoned church at Kelvin Grove. As I do, I moved a fence and convinced Josh to come and explore with me. It was just a beautiful place with amazing views of Bris-vegas!

Josh then drove me back to dad's place but before I went inside the building I could hear music playing from the RiverStage. I discovered the 'Thank God It's Over' Festival happening and proceeded to climb a four story building to dance on the rooftop and watch into the venue. From the roof I spotted a girl do a ninja roll under a fence and into the venue and before the Hilltop Hoods could finish their set I climbed down from the building and did the same.

This was possibly the most perfect weekend I have had.

Loving everything this amazing Earth has for those that choose to enjoy it!

Mahalo!

Friday 13th

I was doing a lot of nothing on Friday while listening to the entertaining antics of community radio (4zZz) when I felt compelled to call in and share a story in response to their "lame excuses" segment. The story went as follows:

When I was in grade 10 I had some matches and candles in my locker that my group was planning to use on a friend's birthday cake. I lit the candles in the locker room and found out at lunch time, when the grade coordinator came to speak to me, that someone had dobbed me in. The grade coordinator (a lady who tried to eliminate hugging at our private single-sex school because she insisted it promoted homosexuality), asked me why I had been seen lighting candles at my locker earlier that day. I told her it was part of my new religion, a response she took seriously. She asked me what religion it was, of what denomination and when I had joined. I told her I didn't know a lot about it. She advised me to see the school chaplain. I found out a couple of years later that this teacher had become immediately concerned about what I had said and kept an eye on me. I found out because a couple of years later she took my parents aside and told them that she was really worried about me because I had apparently, "lost weight, joined a cult and was suspected of doing drugs"! My parents knew me a lot better than that (thank their good senses) and started hysterically laughing at her claims. She repordedly then told my parents that they should be taking her seriously and that that this was a sign of irresponsible parenting. At that point my mum's roaring laughter reportedly caused her to fall of her chair and she exclaim between fits that I had told a little lie a couple of years earlier and that I was no cause for concern..."

The 4zZz crew then told me to come in before 5 to collect a double movie pass and T-shirt they had for me which I did before chilling in Fringe bar to the soulful folky tunes of Aiba.

It was such a nice way to spend a Friday late afternoon. That night Aiba and I decided to go and catch a movie with another friend of mine, Clare, at SouthBank. Before the movie we were temporarily distracted by free Salsa fun on Little Stanley Street where we had a boogie before laughing at the witty quirkiness of Litte Miss Sunshine.

What a great Friday 13th and awesome kick start to the weekend!

Crazy days...

Today was one of 'those' days...

The filming for the lingere company went okay. I especially liked the part were my butt, hip, thigh and tummy fat were pointed out as being supremely minimized due to the 'control' briefs I was wearing... I hope no one recognises me...

In the afternoon I found out that the love of my life and I are no longer game on... I found out from a great friend in the States...

Tonight was graduation, I tripped on stage. Not really. But it would have been fitting. Actually, graduation was the best part of my day. I thought there wouldn't be any familiar people there but there were a few very quality people who I had not seen in a while and didn't know if I would see again. It was great. Plus, I never thought I would get excited about graduating but it was quite exciting and I am glad I went. Everything is so official now and I feel proud!

Congratulations to the university medal nominated person that was acknowledged at my cermony! I used to work with and be in class with this guy when he was still a girl. He was concerned about being a gay male in a female body and was looking forward to the day when he could rectify nature's painful mistake. He has now achieved this and throughout the process has managed to achieve a virtually impossible GPA of 7 (highest score possible at university, basically equivilent to perfect grades). Congratulations again and thank you for being such an inspiration!

Thanks 'friend'...

My friends know that I like to sleep in, often until the morning has safely become afternoon.

My friends also know that I keep my cell phones on in case they have an emergency, so I can sleepily attempt an uncoordinated rescue.

One ‘friend’ of mine rang me this morning and was all, “Good morning angel”, to which I managed a husky crackle inviting her to continue, “I know this is well before the time you usually get up but I was wondering whether you wanted $200 worth of free underwear?”. I managed a croak. “Great!” ‘friend’ said, “All you have to do is appear on Brisbane Extra tomorrow in your underwear, I’ll pick you up at 8”.

“Huh?? Umm... do you know how big I am..”
“Yeah, we actually wanted someone bigger but I can’t find anyone else. You’ll be great. Now you are not going to pull out on me, are you?”
Croak.
“Promise?”
“For you, anything”.

Now clearly, CLEARLY, I was in a dream. I was not conscious enough to actually be held to my dreamt words... Alas, ‘friend’ has since called me, three times, to make sure I am not going to back out... The last time she called she let me know that I would be wearing ‘control underwear’ to which I exclaimed, “You want me to wear granny undies?!?”. She claims she already told me this morning but obviously I was out for the count....

Felicia, you are SO lucky I love you....”

Sydney

Sorry for the lack of contact the last few days, I have been away from Bris-vegas and catching up with old and new friends in Sydney.

It was FUN!

Partied with the World Youth Congress kids at a friend's 27th birthday party on Friday (after Darling Harbour fireworks and salsa).

Checked out Bondi and then walked to Coogee Beach along the coastal path on Saturday.

Chatted and giggled with a new friend during her gig rehersals on Sunday.

Beached it again on Monday.

Caught up with another friend, shopped, explored more of Darling Harbour, the Rocks, Circular Quay and the infamous Opera House (with accompanying coat hanger of a bridge), before catching my delayed flight back up to the Sunshine State on Tuesday.

It was a nice little adventure!

Big old thanks to Shish, Amelia, Ngaire, Iktimal and especially Bern for making my Sydney visit a delight!

Mwah!!
